LES CREATURES: FOUR NEW BEERS

A group of painted fish from the 18th century decorate our new series. Just like our beer, these lush drawings are the product of scientific curiosity and wild imagination.

We hunted through the numerous pages of Louis Renard’s Fishes, crayfish and crabs, of various colors and extraordinary figures, which one finds around the Moluccas islands and on the coasts of the Austral lands. This collection of dazzling drawings of marine life had scientific intention, but is largely fantastical. He never saw any of these creatures, but simply imagined their glorious colours.

For our next beer series, we wanted to capture these fun and fantastical elements, pairing the sophisticated with absurdist and playful names.

The flavours of the beers were inspired by the end of summer, soft tropics and zesty fruits. See tasting notes below!

LIVE LAUGH LOVE 4.6% is a joyful beer, a delectable pale ale to be enjoyed in the last of the summer sunshine. Pillowy and soft from an oat-y, dense malt bill, with Citra added into the boil, creating a soft citrus and peach aroma. Creating a whirlpool in the boil, we added hops into the boil for a special, high-gravity finish, using overlapping Mosaic and Cascade to accomplish the beer’s juicy, sticky sweetness.

Our West Coast IPA is STOP TRYING TO MAKE FETCH HAPPEN 5.8%, a nostalgic beer with zesty bitterness. When devising the recipe, we wanted to make a West Coast IPA, which felt close to the style, with pine shining front-and-centre. Using wheat, Vienna and pale malt, we made a base which added a creamy element to the body as well as gentle  amber haze. Seeking a bold, popping aroma, we added masses of Citra leaf hops to the tail-end of the boil. To finish, we added a wonderful blend of Cashmere and Simcoe to the dry hop, complementing the resinous pine with tropical fruits.

To complete this magical trio, we’ve brewed a heavenly sour, HOITY TOITY 4.5%. Modelled on a Berliner Weisse, we complemented wheat notes with copious amounts of fresh passion fruit and apricots. We introduced lemon juice to add a sharp zing, to cut through the bold tropical aromas of the pureed fruit.
